New Zealand Adds Two Residence Pathways Next to the SMC: Who Can Use Them and How to Prepare

News · 2026-08-26 · 5 min read

For many years, the Skilled Migrant Category was the only main road for most skilled workers who wanted New Zealand residence. It had one set of thresholds, one wage bar and one way to show you qualified. From 24 August 2026, this changes. Immigration New Zealand is not just making small edits to the SMC. It is adding two extra routes beside it, and each one is built for a different type of migrant.

Maybe you have heard that you are not quite SMC material because your qualification does not fit the points table well. Or maybe your industry has faced extra suspicion because of past misuse. If so, read this update carefully. It may finally work in your favour.

The Thinking Behind INZ's Changes

Put simply, the old SMC rewarded qualifications and collecting points. It was not always good at recognising migrants who had proven their skills on the job over many years. At the same time, INZ has data showing that some occupations were used to game the system. Job titles were inflated, and some roles were described as skilled when they were not. That is why Immigration NZ is responding in two ways. It is opening new pathways based on real work history, and it is looking more closely at the roles most linked to past abuse.

A Pathway Built on Years of Skilled Work

The first new door is Skilled Work Experience. It is for people who already do genuinely skilled work (ANZSCO levels 1–3) and have a strong track record. You need five years' relevant experience in total. At least two of those years must be in New Zealand, paid at 1.1 times the SMC median wage. In other words, your CV and payslips matter more than your academic transcript.

A Pathway for Qualified Tradespeople

The second new door is Trades and Technician. It is designed for tradespeople and technicians who hold a Level 4+ qualification and have four years of experience since qualifying. Of that time, 1.5 years must be in New Zealand at the median wage. Here, INZ is clearly making room for a group the old SMC often left out: highly capable, formally trained people who do not hold a degree.

Is Your Occupation Red or Amber?

Not every occupation can use these new doors equally. INZ has placed some roles into two watch categories, based on misuse in the past:

  • Red-listed occupations, such as some accommodation management, general management and health-and-beauty roles, cannot use either new pathway. Workers in these jobs must go back to the traditional SMC route. They also face a higher bar: 1.5 times the median wage, or a Level 7+ bachelor's degree.
  • Amber-listed occupations, including some ICT support and food service roles, can still use the Skilled Work Experience pathway. But the bar is higher: five years' experience, with two of them in New Zealand at 1.2 times the median wage instead of 1.1.

Employers hiring for these flagged jobs should see this as a reason to sort out contracts and pay early, well before any residence application. The lists will be reviewed regularly, so a borderline role today could move to another category later.

Smaller Rules That Could Make a Big Difference

Some less visible changes are more important than their place in the announcement suggests:

  • The wage target no longer moves. Migrants now only need to meet the SMC median wage that applied when they started gaining skilled experience. They do not need to meet a higher figure that may have risen by the time they apply. There is also a five-month grace period for people who need a little time to move into skilled work after their visa is granted.
  • Postgraduate points are harder to claim. To claim points for a Level 8 or 9 qualification, you now usually need a bachelor's degree as well. The main exception is a New Zealand master's claimed for 5 points. If you claim 6 points for an NZ master's, however, you need both 30+ weeks of full-time NZ study and a bachelor's degree.
  • English test results stay valid for longer. For applicants with recognised NZ occupational registration, test results now remain valid for five years instead of expiring earlier.
  • Good news for accountants. CPA Australia members who can do Qualified Statutory Accountant work in New Zealand become eligible for the SMC directly.
  • A safety net in 2027. Migrants who fall just short, and need up to 12 more months of skilled experience, will be able to extend their Accredited Employer Work Visa. They will not have to restart their residence clock.

Your Checklist Ahead of 24 August

If these changes affect you or your staff, do not wait until the date arrives:

  • Find out if your occupation is on the red or amber list. This alone decides which pathway is realistically open to you.
  • Compare your wage history with the median wage that applied when your skilled work began, not with today's figure.
  • If you are close to a threshold, speak to your employer about documents now. Payslips, role descriptions and proof of qualifications all take time to collect properly.
  • Employers in red or amber flagged sectors should review job titles and pay bands, because these are exactly the signals INZ says it is watching.

For workers from Indonesia and other countries, it also helps to keep your own papers ready. Prepare an English-language CV, get Indonesian-language documents translated into English as the visa rules require, and apply for an SKCK from the Indonesian National Police if a police certificate is requested.

The Timeline So Far

These changes were first announced in September 2025 and explained in more detail in March 2026. So nobody following the reform should be surprised. But now that the start date is confirmed, the time left to plan is getting shorter. If you are aiming for sponsored jobs New Zealand for Indonesian workers or a residence pathway later, now is a good time to get organised.
