Managers Moving to Australia: Why What You Do Matters More Than What You Are Called
News · 2026-09-28 · 5 min read
Perhaps your career has lasted 10 to 20 years, and you have risen from executive level all the way up to senior manager. Many people in this position believe the skilled visa system in Australia will reward that long climb. Sadly, that is not how assessment works. Australian migration officers focus on your daily tasks. The job title printed on your card carries little weight.
Why Matching Titles Can Hide Different Roles
Think about two workers who share the same title: "Operations Managers". One leads an entire business unit. She has budget authority, and several managers report to her. The other looks after a small crew and sends most choices up the line. Their CVs might look alike. Yet a migration assessment could place them in completely different occupations, and maybe even on different visa options.
This also happens with titles such as "Director" or "Vice President". In some firms, senior specialists receive them. In others, only the people steering the entire organisation get them. Assessors in Australia ignore this branding. What they check are duties like planning operations, controlling budgets, setting policy and leading senior staff.
Is your work mainly hands-on technical specialist work? Or are you a genuine manager in charge of strategy, people and budgets? These two profiles can belong to different occupation codes.
Pathways to Explore, Beyond a Single Visa Name
Begin with a map of your career rather than a visa name. In fact, nothing called an "Australian Manager Visa" exists. People with strong management backgrounds tend to consider these options:
- Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482). Here, a sponsoring employer is needed. The visa has two parts, the Core Skills and Specialist Skills streams. The indexed income thresholds for 2026-27 sit at roughly AUD 79,423 (Core Skills) and roughly AUD 146,576 (Specialist Skills). Senior managers may suit the better-paid Specialist stream. But pay is just one factor. Your occupation, what your duties are, who the employer is and the usual market rate for that role are all considered. As a general rule, at least 12 months of relevant experience is needed, and most senior managers pass this point without trouble.
- Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186). This route is permanent. Think about it from the start, because a temporary sponsored position can, in some cases, move into permanent residency via the Temporary Residence Transition stream.
- Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (subclass 494). It may run for up to five years and can open a path to permanent residence. It is a useful reminder that opportunities reach far past Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Many regional employers struggle to recruit managers with experience.
- Points-tested visas (subclasses 189, 190 and 491). Whether these fit you will depend on your age, your occupation, your English and your qualifications. For the 190 and 491, you need nomination by a state or territory.
Thresholds and rules are updated from time to time, so confirm the current position with the Department of Home Affairs before lodging anything.
Pay Has to Make Sense in Australia Too
An offer that reaches the income threshold is not automatically the right offer. It must also reflect the true value of that role in Australia. The way your salary is built at home may not translate. So, before both you and the employer put effort into sponsorship, confirm that the role works from a business point of view as well as an immigration one.
Paperwork Is Easier to Gather Now Than Later
After many years of work, records can be hard to find. Firms close. Managers you once reported to move elsewhere. Position descriptions disappear. Begin building your file today. Useful items include:
- Contracts of employment, plus references from past employers
- Promotion letters that show how you progressed
- Tax documents, payslips and records of your salary
- Charts of the organisation and your reporting lines
- Evidence of how big your team was, which budgets you handled and what decisions you could make
- Degrees and other academic qualifications
Every stage of your progression matters, so cover the full journey and not only the latest position. If any of these records are written in Bahasa Indonesia, arrange English translations where the visa rules ask for them. An English-language CV that explains your duties in each role is also worth preparing.
Think Carefully Before Handing In Your Notice
Before leaving your job, relocating your loved ones or expecting sponsorship from an Australian company, work through this checklist:
- Find the occupation that truly reflects your duties.
- Confirm that this occupation is eligible for the pathway you have in mind.
- Understand how your age affects the options.
- See whether the proposed pay meets the requirements and fits the market.
- Find out if a skills assessment applies to you.
- Identify an employer that is able and willing to sponsor.
- Consider whether regional roles might suit you.
- Make sure your experience can be properly documented.
- Picture your route to permanent residence.
Hireable Is One Test, Visa-Ready Is Another
Australian businesses look for leaders able to lift sales, restructure operations, deliver big projects, drive digital change and make compliance stronger. Your background has genuine value to them. Still, employer interest alone does not make you eligible. Both things must line up, and checking them early reduces surprises.
Finally, past results are not a safe guide. Thresholds get indexed, occupation lists shift and state programs are revised. A route that once was shut may now be available, and an open one may close. For managers who want to work in Australia from Indonesia, the smartest first move is to describe your real duties well and connect them to the right pathway.
