Graduating in New Zealand? Two Work Visa Routes Change in November 2026, Here Is What to Prepare

News · 2026-09-23 · 5 min read

Good news for international students in New Zealand. The country is changing the rules for graduates who want to stay and work after they finish studying. From November 16, 2026, there will be two visa pathways. One is a completely new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa. The other is a wider Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV). Together they will give thousands more graduates a real, legal way into work in New Zealand.

Are you studying there now, or planning to study there soon? This guide explains the changes in simple words, so you do not miss your chance. To keep things easy, we call the new visa Pathway 1 and the wider PSWV Pathway 2.

The Problem These Changes Try to Fix

For many years, a lot of diploma and certificate graduates were stuck. They had a qualification. They wanted to work. But no visa pathway matched their level of study. This update goes straight at that gap.

It also changes how you apply. All applications will move to Immigration New Zealand's improved Immigration Online platform. Maybe you graduate in a few months. Maybe you are only starting your course now. Either way, these changes can shape your whole plan after study.

A Brand-New Visa With Open Work Rights

The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa is a new visa category. It is made for graduates whose qualifications did not lead to any work visa before. It gives you up to six months of open work rights. That is time to look for a job, get local experience, and maybe move on to an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).

Can You Apply? Check This List

  • You hold a qualification at level 5–7 on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF).
  • You studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks.
  • You are not already eligible for a PSWV.
  • You can show at least NZD 5,000 in available funds.
  • You have never been granted this visa or a PSWV before.
  • If you studied under the New Zealand Scholarship Programme, you have sign-off from MFAT or Education New Zealand (where this applies).
  • You have medical and chest X-ray clearance, if your length of stay requires it.

Limits You Should Know

Graduates of English-language, foundation or bridging courses cannot apply. People on this visa cannot own a business. Family members cannot come as dependents on this visa. However, they can apply on their own as visitors or under other visa categories.

Do not wait too long. You must apply within three months after your student visa ends. This means that if your student visa ended before August 16, 2026, you are already outside the window. Also, you can only get this visa once. There is no renewal and no second try.

The PSWV Now Welcomes Graduate Diploma Holders

The PSWV already exists, but now more people can get it. If you finish an NZQCF level 7 Graduate Diploma, you can now qualify. You must also have a bachelor's degree. It can be from New Zealand or from another country, and it does not matter when you earned it.

Documents and Conditions

  • You studied full-time for the whole Graduate Diploma, with no cross-crediting and no recognition of prior learning.
  • You have a genuine bachelor's degree certificate that shows the type of qualification and the institution.
  • You have an official academic transcript.

Here is one helpful change. A bachelor's degree from overseas does not need a separate International Qualification Assessment. But Immigration New Zealand can still check that it is genuine.

How long is the visa? It depends on how long you studied the Graduate Diploma, up to a maximum of one year. You can also only get it once. If you held a PSWV in the past, you cannot get another one, even with more qualifications.

There is a big plus for this group. Unlike the new Short-Term visa, PSWV holders can bring their partners and dependent children, who apply for their own visas.

Applying Online Only After the Switch

From November 16, 2026, every application for both visas must go through the upgraded Immigration Online platform. It offers better tracking, and its rules follow current policy. Paper-based PSWV applications will stop. If you send one on or before November 15, 2026, it will still be processed under the old system. After that date, you can only apply online.

Tips for Students From Indonesia

The main lesson is timing. Deadlines are strict: three, six or twelve months after your visa ends, depending on your pathway and course. Each visa can only be granted once. And many eligibility rules depend on choices you make long before graduation, such as studying full-time and how your course is classified under the NZQCF.

So check your visa options now, not after you finish. Keep your bachelor's degree certificate and transcript ready. If any of your documents are in Indonesian, have them translated into English as the visa rules require. Good planning today can lead to work in New Zealand tomorrow.
