Sous Chef

Most kitchen jobs mean late nights. This one does not. Most shifts end around 3:30pm. The roster is 38 hours across five days, built mainly around the morning and lunchtime trade.

The venue is a lively, fresh food business in Clarence Park, Adelaide. It sells a distinctive deli, café and sandwich-style range, so you get variety and space for creative ideas.

Who are they after? An experienced Chef de Partie, or a Sous Chef still early in the role, who wants more responsibility. You will be hands-on and work alongside the Head Chef. Sometimes you will lead the kitchen yourself and decide things during service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Help the Head Chef keep daily operations running well, and lead service yourself when asked
  • Look after your own section confidently, needing little supervision
  • Get mise en place and other prep done ahead of each service
  • Cook every dish to the recipe and the quality standard, keeping taste, plating and portion size the same each time
  • Prepare food quickly and present it to a high standard
  • Suggest dishes, specials and improvements for the kitchen
  • Keep an eye on how ingredients are used so less food is wasted, and assist with stock control and placing orders
  • Meet food safety and hygiene requirements, and keep every kitchen area clean, tidy and service-ready
  • Keep a cool head and a steady pace through the rush
  • Communicate well with the Head Chef and kitchen crew, and support less experienced staff where required
  • Take responsibility for high standards all through service

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Has worked as a Chef de Partie, Sous Chef or in a similar commercial kitchen role
  • Background in a commercial kitchen such as a café, restaurant, bistro, deli or comparable venue
  • Strong cooking and prep skills, with an organised kitchen approach
  • Can run a kitchen section independently and with confidence
  • Shows they can follow recipes and keep results consistent
  • Sharp eye for detail, food quality and presentation
  • Stays organised and composed when service is busy
  • Dependable and reliable at work
  • Communicates well and works well in a team
  • Positive, and willing to take responsibility
  • Shows leadership potential and can make decisions confidently when required
  • Relevant culinary qualifications are advantageous
  • Committed to full-time employment, and willing to complete the required 6-month trial period
