Do you enjoy drawing up real buildings and helping projects get council approval? A multidisciplinary consultancy in NSW wants a Planning / Architectural Draftsperson for its growing team in Rockdale, Sydney.
This job mixes two kinds of work. On the drafting side, you record existing homes. Some of them must be reinstated or redesigned after damage from fire, trees or vehicles. You need to read site conditions correctly, make clear drawings and see how they fit the bigger planning picture. On the planning side, you help with DA preparation, planning paperwork, consultant coordination and portal submissions.
You get real responsibility from your first day. As you prove your skills and the business grows, there is room to step up into a senior or lead position.

Key Responsibilities
- Visit sites, take measurements and turn what you find into detailed architectural drawings of existing residential and medium-density buildings
- Draw up preliminary plans and help identify the structural elements shown in the architectural set
- Create clean 2D AutoCAD drawings in both model and paper space, applying the set drafting standards on every job
- Double-check all drawings and documents so they are accurate, complete and consistent, and sort out any technical or documentation problems quickly
- Review the LEPs, DCPs and other development rules that apply to each site
- Write Statements of Environmental Effects and the other planning documents a project needs
- Prepare Development Application packages, lodge them on the planning portal and help follow each DA through to the next stage
- Pass information between designers and specialist consultants, including heritage, bushfire, stormwater, structural, civil, surveying and arboricultural experts
- Talk clearly with clients, consultants and team members about what each project requires
- Manage your own workload and hit the deadlines you agree to
- Share practical ideas that help the consultancy improve as it gets bigger
Requirements & Eligibility
- Demonstrated experience in architectural drafting, planning or a related professional field
- Relevant qualifications and/or substantial practical industry experience (experienced architectural drafters are encouraged to apply)
- Proven skill in 2D AutoCAD
- Hands-on experience preparing architectural drawings of existing buildings, and the ability to read measurements and existing site conditions accurately
- A good understanding of architectural documentation for residential and medium-density work
- Experience preparing or supporting Development Applications
- Experience with planning documentation, such as Statements of Environmental Effects
- Knowledge of NSW LEPs, DCPs and planning requirements
- Strong understanding of drafting standards and drawing office procedures
- Very accurate work with close attention to detail, plus a strong ability to analyse information and solve technical problems
- Able to coordinate well with multiple consultants and to communicate effectively with clients and project stakeholders
- Strong organisation and time-management skills
- Able to take ownership of assigned work and operate with limited supervision
- Professional written and spoken English communication skills
- Working knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook and Adobe applications
- Able to commence as soon as possible; sponsorship available for suitably qualified candidates
