Marine Technician

Do boat engines feel like home to you? A marine service business in Thames-Coromandel, Waikato, New Zealand, has been operating for years. It now wants a full-time Marine Technician / Outboard Motor Mechanic with genuine hands-on experience. You should be confident enough to own each job: find the fault, service the engine and repair it.

The business wants experienced tradespeople who can prove their qualifications, practical know-how and technical skills. Experience in engine diagnostics, mechanical repairs, marine electrical systems, commissioning and ongoing upkeep is especially useful.

You will join skilled technicians and work in the workshop, on mobile jobs and out on the water. Ongoing technical training keeps you up to date with modern marine technology. Tip: get your trade certificates translated into English if they are in Indonesian.

Key Responsibilities

  • Find faults in the mechanical, electrical, fuel and cooling systems of marine engines, and work out the right repair
  • Service and look after petrol outboards and other marine power systems, including scheduled and preventative maintenance
  • Repair engines, replace parts and do mechanical overhauls, taking engines apart, checking them and putting them back together
  • Tune engines and test how well they perform
  • Use computer diagnostic tools and the makers' own software
  • Fix marine starting, charging and electrical systems
  • Work on MerCruiser sterndrive and inboard systems when needed
  • Fit and set up outboard engines, controls, gauges, wiring, marine electronics and other accessories
  • Carry out pre-delivery checks and commissioning, then run sea trials to confirm engines and systems work well
  • Travel to customers for mobile servicing and repairs when required
  • Keep job sheets, service records and technical paperwork accurate
  • Follow the manufacturers' specifications and repair procedures
  • Keep the workshop safe, tidy and professional
  • Produce high-quality work every time, on every job

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Relevant NZQF Level 4 marine, mechanical or related trade qualification, or an overseas qualification that is equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant work on internal-combustion engines
  • Proven hands-on work with marine or outboard engines, including diagnosing engine faults and repairing them well
  • Strong practical knowledge of servicing engines and replacing mechanical parts
  • Experience with charging and marine electrical systems
  • Can use computerised diagnostic equipment and understand manufacturer service manuals and technical specifications
  • Mercury outboard experience is highly regarded
  • MerCruiser experience is highly regarded
  • Knowledge of SmartCraft and DTS systems is advantageous
  • Marine manufacturer training or certification is an advantage
  • Strong at troubleshooting and solving problems
  • Can work alone and take full ownership of your jobs, and also add value inside an experienced technical team
  • Strong commitment to quality work and workplace safety
  • Full driver’s licence is preferred
  • Must meet the New Zealand employment and immigration requirements that are relevant
  • Employer sponsorship is available for overseas candidates with suitable qualifications
