Furniture Upholsterer

Do you know how to bring old chairs and sofas back to life? A furniture restoration and recovering business in New Zealand, running for many years in Waitakere City, Auckland, needs a Furniture Upholsterer.

This is a practical, hands-on job. You should already know the upholstery trade and be able to work on many kinds of furniture without long training. Your skills need to be backed by real industry experience.

The work is done in a workshop and includes lifting and moving furniture, so you need to be physically fit. A proven work history and strong attention to detail are also important.

Hours are 40 a week, Monday to Friday, with overtime at busy times.

Tip: take good photos of your best upholstery work and prepare an English-language CV.

Key Responsibilities

  • Upholster and re-cover antique, traditional and modern furniture
  • Restore and re-cover pieces to a professional standard
  • Handle upholstery projects on your own with little help
  • Pick the right upholstery method for each kind of furniture
  • Use upholstery tools, machines and workshop equipment safely
  • Get furniture frames ready, place them and move them during production, including lifting them on and off the benches
  • Help load furniture onto transport and unload it
  • Make sure every piece has an excellent, accurate finish
  • Work closely with the people who do cutting, sewing and frame building
  • Keep the workshop clean, safe and in order
  • Work 40 hours each week, Monday to Friday, and help with overtime when the workload goes up

Requirements & Eligibility

  • At least 5 years of professional furniture upholstery experience that can be verified
  • Proven practical work on many different furniture styles
  • Can finish upholstery jobs with limited supervision
  • Good practical knowledge of recovering and restoration methods
  • Able to use upholstery tools and equipment safely
  • Physically able to lift and handle furniture frames
  • Pays close attention to detail and keeps finishing standards consistent
  • Dependable and able to work a full-time schedule, and willing to do overtime when the business needs it
  • Cutting and sewing skills are an advantage
  • Furniture frame-making experience is an advantage
  • Must meet applicable requirements for sponsorship consideration
