Fitter Welder

Do you weld, fit and fabricate with confidence? A growing engineering business in Canterbury, New Zealand wants a skilled Fitter-Welder with real workshop experience.
The work is varied. One week you may build custom truck decks or install cranes. The next, you may fabricate trailers, fix transport equipment or do general engineering jobs. Sometimes you follow detailed drawings. Other times you use your own fabrication judgement.
Your hands-on background is what counts. You need to understand each job, work accurately, make good choices on the workshop floor and meet professional engineering standards. Keep proof of your past welding work, such as references and photos of projects, ready to share.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and fit custom truck decks and other transport structures
- Do crane fit-outs and the fabrication work that goes with them
- Weld mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium using MIG and TIG
- Read engineering drawings and technical specs, then measure, mark, cut and prep materials accurately
- Fabricate, fit and assemble parts and structures to the required quality
- Work out what each repair or fabrication job needs and find a practical fix
- Repair trucks, truck bodies, transport equipment and general engineering items
- Handle urgent, quick-turnaround workshop jobs efficiently
- Check finished work for correct dimensions, strength and finish
- Follow the engineering and certification rules that apply, and work with engineers when inspection, certification or sign-off is needed
- Work safely and keep the workshop professional
Requirements & Eligibility
- Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience in welding, fitting or fabrication
- Proven practical experience in fabrication and in a workshop
- Strong skills in MIG and TIG welding, on mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium/alloy
- Confident at fitting and putting together fabricated structures
- Able to understand technical drawings and work from them
- Able to look at practical fabrication problems and solve them on your own
- Strong attention to measurements, tolerances and the quality of the finished job
- A reliable approach to workmanship, accuracy and safety
- Experience in truck, transport or heavy fabrication is an advantage
- Welding tickets or relevant industry certifications are advantageous but not mandatory, and you should be willing to get more welding certifications where required
- Able to give verifiable evidence of your relevant trade experience and work history
- Suitable overseas applicants may be considered for employer-sponsored work; candidates must meet the New Zealand employment and visa requirements that apply
