Do big machines excite you? In Redbank, Brisbane, a long-running Queensland business working in construction and engineering is hiring a Diesel Fitter / Heavy Plant Mechanic. The mission: keep its many construction and mobile plant machines dependable.
Workshop servicing is only part of the day. Expect specialised plant and call-outs to sort out breakdowns on site. The ideal person has truly worked on heavy machinery, can diagnose tricky faults, and repairs to a high standard.
Suitability is judged on your trade credentials, background and hands-on experience. Overseas applicants who hold suitable qualifications and meet the experience and visa criteria can receive employer sponsorship. Tip: if the visa rules ask for it, translate your Indonesian-language documents into English.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond to field breakdowns, sort them by priority and bring each machine back into service efficiently
- Maintain and service many types of heavy construction and mobile plant, such as excavators, cranes, piling rigs and the machinery around them
- Complete each planned service and preventative maintenance program
- Investigate mechanical faults and work out how best to repair them
- Diagnose hydraulic system faults and repair them
- Use electrical fault-finding to trace problems on heavy mobile machines
- During onsite inspections, note any maintenance or repair work required
- Replace mechanical and hydraulic components that are worn, damaged or have failed
- Choose suitable workshop tools and diagnostic gear for repairs
- Once a repair is done, test the machine to confirm it operates safely and dependably
- Log every service, repair, inspection and component change
- Handle remote and onsite call-outs independently
- Keep the workshop tidy and safe with good work practices, in line with all workplace health and safety procedures
Requirements & Eligibility
- Recognised trade qualification: Diesel Fitting, Heavy Plant Mechanic, Mobile Plant Mechanic or an equivalent
- Industry experience fixing and maintaining heavy mobile plant, which you can demonstrate
- Strong history with earthmoving, construction or specialised heavy equipment
- Hands-on knowledge of cranes, excavators, piling rigs or comparable machines
- Advanced ability to diagnose and find mechanical faults
- Sound knowledge of hydraulic systems and how to repair their parts
- Has used electrical diagnostics on mobile plant before
- Has done breakdown response or field-service work previously
- Fixes problems and completes repairs with no need for constant supervision
- At ease in both the workshop and on construction sites
- A current Australian driver's licence (or relevant eligibility to obtain one)
- Strong awareness of safety and professional ways of working, with a self-motivated, adaptable and reliable attitude
- Can show evidence of relevant professional experience and qualifications
- Knowing CAT, Komatsu, Hitachi, Liebherr, Tadano, Grove, Franna, Terex or comparable equipment will be advantageous
