CNC Machine Operator / Machinist

Do you like machining work that changes from day to day? A precision engineering company in Christchurch, New Zealand needs an experienced CNC Machinist. The company is well established and makes high-quality machined parts for many different industries.

This is not repetitive production work. You will set up, prove and run CNC milling machines by yourself. You will make new precision-engineered components and repair old ones. Most jobs are one-off or small-batch projects on advanced CNC machining centres. Parts can be small and exact, or large pieces of industrial equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Study engineering drawings and technical specifications before each job starts
  • Pick the tooling, fixtures and workholding that suit each part
  • Set up, prove and run CNC milling machines on your own, including machine adjustments and checking each program
  • Machine precision parts that match the drawings and the required tolerances, across one-off and small-batch projects of many kinds
  • Check parts while you machine them, so quality and accuracy stay right
  • Find machining problems early and fix them, so output stays high
  • Keep your machines and your work area clean and tidy, and bring precision, good workmanship and safety to every task
  • Work with the production team to finish projects on time, and share ideas for continuous improvement and more efficient manufacturing

Requirements & Eligibility

  • Proven work history as a CNC Machinist, with strong CNC milling experience
  • You can set up, prove and operate CNC milling machines independently
  • Experience with multi-axis CNC machining centres in a precision engineering workplace
  • Strong skills in reading and understanding engineering drawings
  • Sound knowledge of cutting tools, tolerances and machining processes
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, plus high attention to detail and a commitment to quality work
  • You work efficiently in a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment
  • A positive attitude, good teamwork and a commitment to workplace health and safety practices
  • A relevant trade qualification or equivalent industry experience is highly regarded
