CNC Machine Operator / Machinist

Trade · Christchurch Central, Canterbury, New Zealand · Full-Time · $35/hr

In precision machining, your skills show in what you set up, make, measure and fix. The title on your CV alone does not prove much. This role in Christchurch is for CNC Machinists with real, verifiable hands-on expertise who want to work in a technically demanding New Zealand engineering workplace.

The work is varied. You will use CNC milling, turning and multi-axis machines on precision components, complex industrial parts, one-off jobs, small production runs, and repair or refurbishment work. You need to assess each job, make smart technical decisions and produce accurate results with little supervision.

The employer checks that your machining background is backed by credible evidence of your skills and employment history. Employer sponsorship is available for candidates who meet the required criteria.

Key Responsibilities

  • Get CNC machinery ready for precision jobs, and test and adjust each machining program before a run starts
  • Run CNC milling, turning and multi-axis machines
  • Work out tooling, workholding and cutting settings from engineering drawings, dimensions and technical specs
  • Make parts to the specified measurements and tolerances, checking them with in-process measurements and quality inspections
  • Solve machining, tooling and setup problems as they come up
  • Use your own technical judgement on unfamiliar or difficult jobs
  • Handle one-off, prototype and low-volume work, as well as complex and larger industrial components
  • Machine parts for repair, refurbishment and modification
  • Watch machining processes, adjust them where needed, and keep accuracy and workmanship consistent
  • Follow safety, quality and operational procedures and finish assigned jobs efficiently and on time
  • Share practical ideas for better machining methods and processes
  • Work well with experienced engineering and workshop teams

  • Proven professional experience as a CNC Machinist, including demonstrable hands-on CNC setup and operation
  • Experience in CNC milling, turning and/or multi-axis machining
  • Able to set and prove machining jobs independently
  • A strong background in precision engineering or similar machining work
  • Experience in one-off, small-batch or high-mix production
  • Able to read engineering drawings and specifications with confidence
  • Demonstrated knowledge of workholding, tooling and cutting parameters, and a strong understanding of machining tolerances and dimensional accuracy
  • Proven practical skill in troubleshooting and solving problems, and able to make sound technical decisions on your own
  • Experience with complex or larger industrial components is advantageous
  • Strong attention to detail, a commitment to quality, and a reliable, safety-focused way of machining
  • Able to work independently and add positively to a team
  • A relevant machining trade qualification is advantageous
  • Your professional experience and employment history must be capable of verification
  • Candidates must meet the New Zealand employment and sponsorship requirements that apply; employer sponsorship is available for suitably qualified candidates with verified CNC expertise
