Climbing Arborist

Is tree climbing your trade? Two Climbing Arborists are wanted in Whakatane, in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. The employer is a tree care operation that has been running for years.

Selection is about fit. What you have studied, what you have done in the field and how strong your technical ability is will all count when people are chosen.

Sites include farms, homes and commercial properties. One day may be simple maintenance or a reduction; the next may be a technical removal or a large project. Good workmanship, careful safety planning and saving mature trees and vegetation where practical are high priorities for this crew.

Tip: if your certificates are in Indonesian, have them translated into English when the visa rules require it.

Key Responsibilities

  • Climb and work as a professional arborist at commercial, rural and residential properties, and take part in big commercial tree care projects
  • Prune, reduce and technically remove trees
  • Pick the right climbing, rigging and dismantling approach for every tree and every site
  • Keep both aerial operations and work on the ground safe
  • Use specialist arboricultural machines and gear whenever the job requires
  • Assess the site before starting, and stick to the planned work and safety procedures
  • Protect buildings, infrastructure, retained vegetation and other assets on site while you work
  • Put tree retention and vegetation protection first wherever you reasonably can
  • Maintain your climbing equipment, tools, machinery and PPE professionally
  • Cooperate closely with ground staff and fellow arborists to get jobs done efficiently
  • Attend paid training and develop your skills over time
  • Go out to emergency and callout tree jobs when required, with consistent safety, reliability and quality on every job

Requirements & Eligibility

  • You hold a Level 3 or Level 4 Arboriculture qualification, or have equivalent experience you can demonstrate
  • You have a proven background working as a climbing arborist
  • Your aerial climbing and tree work skills are competent
  • You have practical rigging experience and have done technical removals
  • On suitable jobs, you can lead climbing operations independently
  • You have a strong grasp of safe practice in arboricultural work
  • Essential: Class 1 driver's licence. Advantageous: Class 2 or heavy transport licence
  • You have the physical fitness for hard outdoor tree work
  • You are trustworthy, dependable and professional, and you communicate and cooperate strongly with your team
  • You are open to further arboricultural training where required
  • Overseas applicants are welcome if their relevant experience and qualifications can be verified, and suitable overseas applicants can receive sponsorship
  • You must satisfy the relevant New Zealand work visa and employer requirements
