Boat Builder/Engineer/Alloy Fabricator

Key Responsibilities

  • Study engineering and fabrication drawings so you know exactly what to build
  • MIG-weld aluminium, and also weld other kinds of metal
  • Take care of boat-building, fabrication, fitting and assembly jobs
  • Get materials ready: measure them, cut them and set them in position
  • Operate the workshop machinery, including saws, shearing gear, cranes and benders
  • Handle drills, grinders, squares, levels and other engineering hand and power tools
  • Look over every welded or fabricated component to confirm it is accurate and good quality
  • Weld to a consistent standard and keep your workmanship professional, always following workplace health and safety procedures
  • Keep the workshop tidy, including your tools and equipment, and raise any production, equipment or material concerns with your supervisor
  • Team up with supervisors and co-workers to hit production requirements, and suggest ways to improve workshop processes, productivity and project outcomes
  • Complete your time sheets, material requests and any other documents the job needs

Requirements & Eligibility

  • You have proven professional experience in welding, fabrication or boat building
  • You have strong practical aluminium welding experience
  • You can demonstrate MIG welding of a high standard
  • You have worked with different metals and different welding processes
  • You can interpret engineering drawings accurately
  • You know fabrication machinery and workshop equipment in practice, and you have used engineering hand and power tools
  • You understand safe workshop practice and occupational health and safety requirements
  • You pay strong attention to accuracy and detail
  • You produce consistent, high-quality work and solve practical fabrication problems well
  • You can work effectively by yourself and in a team
  • You are reliable and safety-conscious, and committed to production standards
  • You are willing to provide evidence of your relevant skills and employment, and willing to work in Southland, New Zealand
  • Employer-supported sponsorship may be available if you meet the required experience, skills and eligibility criteria
